Sau khi ghi nhận các nhiễm biến thể phụ BA.2 của chủng Omicron tại Quảng Đông, các nhà khoa học Trung Quốc đã nghiên cứu về phiên bản tàng hình này.
Theo một bài viết đăng trên tuần san của Trung tâm Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Dịch bệnh (CDC) Trung Quốc, hôm 24/12/2021, một người đàn ông 31 tuổi trên chuyến bay từ Muscat (Oman) đến Quảng Châu (Trung Quốc) đã được cách ly tập trung tại một khách sạn. Đến ngày 27/12, người này có kết quả dương tính với virus SARS-CoV-2 gây bệnh Covid-19 nên được đưa đi điều trị tập trung.
Kết quả giải trình tự gen sau đó cho thấy, người đàn ông này đã nhiễm dòng BA.2 của biến chủng Omicron, hay còn gọi là phiên bản "tàng hình" của Omicron.
Theo các nhà khoa học Trung Quốc, so với chủng gốc SARS-CoV-2 được phát hiện ở Vũ Hán, tỉnh Hồ Bắc, Trung Quốc, dòng BA.2 có đến 67 thay đổi ở nucleotide. Ở cấp độ protein, các nhà nghiên cứu phát hiện biến thể này có tổng số 49 đột biến axit amin, bao gồm 27 đột biến ở protein gai.
Trước đó, các nhà khoa học đã phát hiện phiên bản tàng hình của Omicron trong các mẫu xét nghiệm tại Nam Phi, Australia và Canada. Các nhà nghiên cứu lo ngại rằng BA.2 có thể khiến người nhiễm virus không nhận biết được mình đang mắc bệnh do vậy cũng dễ làm lây lan virus.
Omicron là biến chủng được phát hiện lần đầu tiên ở châu Phi và hiện đã lan ra ít nhất 128 quốc gia trên thế giới. Kết quả giải trình tự gen cho thấy, Omicron có chứa hơn 50 đột biến, trong đó hơn 30 đột biến trên protein gai - cấu trúc có thể chi phối khả năng lây lan hoặc né miễn dịch của virus. Các nghiên cứu chỉ ra, Omicron có 3 nhánh phụ gồm BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, trong đó BA.1 phổ biến nhất. BA.2 được gọi là phiên bản tàng hình vì nó khó phát hiện hơn.
