Khoảng một tháng sau khi được phát hiện ở châu Phi, biến chủng Omicron đã xuất hiện ở 89 quốc gia trên thế giới với tốc độ lây lan nhanh chóng ở những nơi có lây nhiễm cộng đồng.
Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) ngày 18/12 cho biết, Omicron - biến chủng mới nhất của virus SARS-CoV-2 gây bệnh Covid-19 - đã lan ra 89 quốc gia trên thế giới. Cũng theo WHO, số ca nhiễm biến chủng Omicron tăng gấp đôi cứ sau 1,5 ngày đến 3 ngày ở những nơi có tình trạng lây nhiễm trong cộng đồng.
"Đã có bằng chứng cho thấy biến chủng Omicron có khả năng lây lan cao hơn đáng kể so với Delta, số ca nhiễm tăng gấp đôi chỉ sau 1,5-3 ngày", WHO cho biết trong bản cập nhất mới nhất về Omicron.
Đáng chú ý, theo WHO, Omicron đang lây lan nhanh ở cả những quốc gia có tỷ lệ miễn dịch cao, song hiện chưa rõ đây có phải là bằng chứng cho thấy Omicron có thể né miễn dịch hay không, hay do khả năng lây lan cao, hay do cả hai.
WHO xếp Omicron vào nhóm biến chủng "đáng lo ngại" hôm 26/11, chỉ một ngày sau khi Nam Phi cảnh báo về sự xuất hiện biến chủng này. Đến nay, dữ liệu về biến chủng này vẫn còn hạn chế, đặc biệt về độc lực của nó.
"Cần thêm nhiều dữ liệu nữa để đánh giá mức độ nghiêm trọng của Omicron và ảnh hưởng của nó đến miễn dịch tạo ra bởi vaccine và do từng mắc Covid-19", WHO nhấn mạnh.
WHO cảnh báo, số ca nhiễm Omicron đang tăng rất nhanh, do vậy hệ thống bệnh viện ở một số nơi có thể sẽ bị quá tải. "Các ca nhập viện ở Anh và Nam Phi tiếp tục tăng, do số ca nhiễm tiếp tục tăng mạnh, nên rất có thể nhiều hệ thống y tế có thể sẽ nhanh chóng bị quá tải".
